Overview
Are you an experienced Life Underwriter ready for an opportunity to
be a part of our growing team?
We are looking for a Chief Underwriter to join our team as we
implement exciting underwriting technology and innovation into our
practice. This role, in collaboration with our internal Risk
Management team and external Reinsurance partners, will provide
leadership and direction for the development and implementation of
underwriting guidelines and processes, as well as short and
long-term underwriting strategies. The Chief Underwriter will also
recommend and implement changes to enhance profitable growth and
ensure mortality pricing and risk assumptions are met.
The ideal candidate is proficient in all areas of risk selection
including monitoring adherence to underwriting guidelines and has
experience effectively discussing and making recommendations for
high-risk cases.
Responsibilities
- Identifies underwriting staff and field training needs and
identifies/develops programs to address those needs in conjunction
with the Medical Director. Works collaboratively with the team to
create positive and productive relationships with AAA Life field
partners.
- In partnership with Risk Management works to establish
effective underwriting guidelines and an approach that supports
product mortality assumptions and expenses. This includes
supporting the creation and maintenance of programs that assist
underwriting through technology such as the utilization of a rule
approach to achieve efficiency and profitability.
- In conjunction with Risk Management, evaluates results and
effectiveness of underwriting requirements, such as laboratory,
APS, and MVR data, and recommends modifications based on findings.
Establishes requirements that support programs.
- Has responsibility for providing approval authorities to all
underwriters based on their experience, knowledge, and skill.
Communicates approval authorities and maintains centralized
documentation of all authorities and archived history.
- Serves as the primary underwriting contact for reinsurance
partners. Coordinates reinsurance audits, reviews and responds to
audit inquiries, and reports findings to the risk committee and
senior management.
- Communicates with underwriters, managers, actuaries,
reinsurance partners, and field agents regarding complex
cases.
- Participates in ongoing mortality risk committee meetings
representing underwriting as a subject matter expert and prepares
for future product launches, providing insight and preparing
presentations as needed.
- Corresponds with reinsurance partners and vendors proactively
to establish policy, research-underwriting trends and grow
partnerships.
- Responsible for management and leadership of the Medical
Director position, referral underwriting team, and post-issue
investigations team.
- Identifies underwriting staff training needs and
identifies/develops programs for their professional development to
foster improved productivity, and quality and prepare for the
future. Monitors the underwriting staff's adherence and
understanding of risk selection through testing, audits, and case
reviews. Provides regular performance feedback to underwriters and
managers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent Underwriting specific
experience.
- Minimum of 10 Years + Life Underwriting Experience
- Industry education such as FLMI, ACS, CLU, or FALU
- Past approval authority more than $3 million; all ages and rate
classes
- Proficient EKG interpretation skills
- Proficient analytical skills to analyze data, identify trends
and make recommendations.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving
skills
- Experience successfully mentoring other professionals.
For the states of California, Colorado, New York and Washington the
pay scale is $128,386 to $192,580
